T.J.’s Answer

Hello Jesse!

Chemistry gets defined in a few different ways:

- the study of the properties and behavior of matter.
- a natural science covering substances' composition, structure, and properties
- a branch of science where the way properties change and substances form are studied.

To learn more about it, you should check out Khan Academy. They'll explain topics in chemistry that's easy to understand and you can practice solving problems.

Fred’s Answer

I am not a chemist, so don't take mine as a definitive answer.

My understanding is that chemistry is the study of how matter interacts, what things are made of, and how to combine (or i assume can be separated) into new compounds.

For example, a long time ago, we thought water was a basic thing. Then, at some point, we learned it's actually made of two other things - Hydrogen and Oxygen. We learned how to separate a water molecule into those two things, and how to combine those two things into water.

We learned what molecules are made of (atoms of elements), and then what a atom is made of (protons, neutrons, and electrons). I believe that's where chemistry stops - when you get into what protons, etc., are made of, you're now into sub-atomic physics.
