Linda’s Answer

This really depends there are many variables. You can work with a established designer under their name and compensation is a salary based as you work on projects developed by them for their clients. If you bring in your own clientele you should be compensated on a percentage basis from total profit of the project but remember you are able to succeed using all of the assets provided by your employers hard work and investments so negotiate a fair transaction with this in mind. You may also work on commission which a percentage based on your total profit intake and can be quite lucrative if you have a talent for sales. If you are a independent designer and hourly charge for services is standard with a percentage on markups such as wallpaper, furnishings, accessories and custom framing, upholstery and draperies to name a few. Remember if you want successful financial rewards, hard work is required and there is no honest or honorable way around this ,and at the end of the day when you look at the beautiful results you can beat you chest like Tom Hanks in the movie Castaway and say "I made fire"

Whitney’s Answer

Hi! I am a commercial interior designer in the US. IIDA.org puts out a salary report every few years that the public is able to access. The AIA also puts out salary information, but it must be paid for. Hope that helps!
