How should I pick a specialty in medicine? Any suggestions?

I want to have a fast paced specialty that has a variety of job requirements. Something in the surgical field peeks my interest. I also want to have a good amount of money to support my lifestyle.

Thank you comment icon Hi Cassidy. I can relate to that feeling where you want something fast paced. And being in the surgical field sounds amazing! One thing I can say for the money part is to build a hustle on the side so you can have that lifestyle that you want. Shianne

Hi there! This is a great question with good detail. Since you expressed interest in the surgical world I would highly recommend looking into a Surgical Tech program. Any program you find to fit your needs will accommodate whatever your life path or style is at the moment to complete successfully. Pursuing a Surgical Tech career can become either an independent leap or a team member. Wherever you Mr path takes you along with passion and desire. After practicing as a Surgical Tech you can further your education as a Surgical First Assistant. That portion of your career is independent and very rewarding. You may choose to be a 1099 employee or work for a group. Overall you have independence along with a solid provisional career. Good Luck!

Lucy recommends the following next steps:

Research Surgical Technology programs near you.
Weigh the options of your time allotted for education
Submit an application for school
Once completed the program research Surgical First Assisting programs.

Choosing a medical specialty is an important decision that medical students often face in the later years of their education. Here are some steps to help you make an informed decision:

1. Start early: It is important to start thinking about your future career in medicine as early as possible. Begin by exploring different specialties and understanding what each one entails.

2. Consider your interests: Think about what types of patients you enjoy working with and what medical conditions you find most interesting.

3. Seek out experiences: Exposure to different specialties during your clinical rotations can be helpful in making your decision. Seek out elective rotations in fields that interest you.

4. Talk to mentors: Seek out advice from physicians and residents in different specialties to gain insights into what it is like to work in different fields.

5. Consider lifestyle factors: Take into account lifestyle factors, such as work hours, call schedules, and work-life balance, when making your decision.

6. Be open-minded: Keep an open mind and be willing to explore different specialties. You may discover a new interest that you hadn't considered before.

Remember that your choice of specialty is not set in stone, and it is common for physicians to change specialties throughout their career. It is important to choose a specialty that you enjoy and that aligns with your interests, values, and career goals.

I think ER would work well for you. I'm just going to warn you that as you get older, your energy runs out and then you have a family. When you are in medical school, you will have the chance to rotate through the different fields and you can get a taste of each field.
