After college I worked in the hospital, nursing home, rehabilitation, then insurance. How can I decide if I should earn a Ph.D. in this field? I would ask the question what am I going to do with it? Carla’s Answer

I’m not a health professional but I can give answers to your questions.
1. What profession did you choose? I was a middle school teacher then transitioned to business training, learning & development consulting. Why? Teaching can be rewarding but it is very stressful and very low pay.
2. How many years of college did you need to go through? I have a bachelors degree in Business Marketing
3. What jobs did you work before you landed your present professional job? Aside from teaching, I worked for big companies in their call center environment for sales, customer service, and billing.
4. How can I decide if I should earn a Ph.D. in this field? If the job will compensate you well enough to pay off any student loan debt. Example: in certain states, a teacher with a master’s degree does not make enough salary to pay off student loans comfortably.
5. Were you in a college program? I was in an academic sorority and very active on campus
6. Did you have to pivot and go back to school at a later date? I went back to get my education credits in order to become a certified teacher.
7. Did you shadow another professional in the field? No
8. Did you join any school clubs related to your current profession? No
9. Was there a particular subject you struggled with during your school years ? Math
10. What skill sets did you learn or gain while pursuing your career? Public speaking, organization of events and programs
11. Were you faced with any obstacles that slowed you down? I got a job that offered tuition reimbursement because I could not pay for my education credits. How did you overcome them?
12. What is something about your profession that you want others to keep in mind before pursuing the same path? Learn to pivot! It is ok to change your mind about your career! You just need to be committed and have motivation to learn new skills and put yourself out there.
13. What is the most difficult part about working in your professional job? Maintaining a work/life balance. I can sometimes get caught up in “just want to finish this one more thing” that I can end up working after hours and not getting my family/personal time. Your wellness should be a priority.
