What are some less known careers for those who love healthcare and biomedical science while maintaining a decent salary, but still want to be present at home with kids? ?

I am a high school junior currently trying to get an associates done by time my senior graduation. I really love and have a talent in the field of anatomy and biology compared to the likes of physics and certain math subjects. Nonetheless in the future I know it will be important for me to be present for my future kids so and I feel as if my two passions of children and career are not compatible. Any advice?

X-ray technologist? It’s a 2-yr degree with pay commensurate with RNs in many states. With this degree, you can advance further professionally and financially with further training into several other of the imaging sciences.

Nicole recommends the following next steps:

Review catalogs of local community colleges and see what programs they offer
Check out arrt.org - this is the main accrediting body for all of the imaging sciences.
Check with local schools or local hospitals and ask if you ought be allowed a day of “shadowing” with a tech to get an idea off what the job entails

Respiratory Therapy is fantastic. The profession is experiencing steady growth. You can work three 12-hour shifts, which counts as full-time. When you have kids, you can switch to PRN, working only 1 to 3 shifts every 6 weeks.

Maybe laboratory? There are many open areas in medical lab science that could fit your areas of interest. If you like anatomy, check out being a pathologist assistant. These folks do all the gross examination of tissues before processing them into tiny slices for microscopic exams. Similarly, histologists and cytotechnologists are also in need! I am trained as a medical laboratory scientist, and work in a hospital laboratory. MLS's perform the testing that helps save lives every day. All of these careers I mention are typically people who are not on call, and work hourly shifts 5 days a week, allowing time for family and children. I have two kids, and I've been able to attend almost every event they've had going on. They are 10 and 6 now. 😁
