Grant’s Answer

I am a technical writer (sometimes called a "professional explainer" <grin>)
For someone in High School (or Secondary School), I would recommend seeing if there is a chapter of the Society for Technical Communication in their area and attending some of their meetings (real or virtual). Like most professionals, Tech Writers love to talk about the pluses and minuses of their job. Beyond that, I'd suggest 1) looking up some books on the subject (there are quite a number out there), and 2) doing some self examination of what you like to "play" with. Use that engagement to begin filtering out fields that you are not interested in supporting, and focusing on the ones you are interested in.
Two aspects that you might not think of that would serve you well are 1) learning a second language (there is a huge demand for translation and verification of documents), and 2) doing Debate. The research and organization skills you learn there will really help you stand out and be a superior Technical writer.
Technical Writers and Editors do a lot of different things, from writing procedures to writing emergency documents, to creating slide decks and videos, so there is a lot of room for finding things to explain and ways to explain them.

Marcia’s Answer

I would recommend, similar to Yaz's answer, doing some investigating in areas/fields that are of interest to you. Even if it is a summer job that isn't officially an internship but is within an industry or field that you are passionate about. For example, if you are interested in sustainability and environmental pursuits, could you work at a local recycling collection/sorting facility. If you are interested in medical, are there jobs in a local hospital or clinic that you could pursue. Also, do you know friends or family that are in fields that you may be interested in and could you do a job shadow or speak with them regarding their careers?

Bea’s Answer

As a professional in the Information Technology sector, I'm involved in Sales at IBM, a leading company specializing in software, hardware, and services. If you're still in high school and interested in the IT field, there are numerous opportunities for you to explore. You can join tech-related clubs at your school or enroll in specific classes that teach computer programming or design. Moreover, don't hesitate to connect with people who are already working in this field. Ask them about their roles, their daily tasks, and see if any of it piques your interest. Best of luck on your journey!

Yaz’s Answer

As a Talent Acquisition recruiter for a worldwide organization, I highly recommend exploring internships during the summer to gain valuable experience in this field or any other. Additionally, consider seeking opportunities to shadow professionals, allowing you to observe and learn from their daily work routines. This hands-on approach can be incredibly beneficial and motivating for your career growth.
