Can I become a dog trainer without going through college or other schooling?

I don’t have much interest in school but I love dogs and the reward of training them. Just not sure how to get started.

Hello Danielle!

No, you don't need to go to college. You can start becoming a dog trainer as soon as you want to :D

What matters the most is building hands-on experiences with dogs and building your reputation to customers.

A good way to get started with dog training is researching proper dog care. You can find articles, videos, or library books about dogs and their behavior. Learn as much as you can.

Then, find ways to meet some doggos! You can volunteer at a local animal shelter with dogs to get started. After spending time there, you can ask to train dogs either at the shelter or in your community.

Being a professional dog trainer is similar to running your own business. You'll have to provide good customer service, show patience, and manage your time and resources.

To start, here's some resources to help you learn more! (They provide similar information above but with more details):

Katie’s Answer

People will probably ask your qualifications, but likely a lot of your business will come through referrals. Your "resume" will be the other dogs you have trained. Start with offering to train some dogs in your area (perhaps at a lower rate or free) as a way to get your name out there and put some experience behind you. You will need to setup a business if you plan to operate this as a full time operation. Make sure you establish a separate business account and savings for taxes that you will have to pay at the end of the year. Track all your expenses (mileage driving to locations to train etc.).

Katie recommends the following next steps:

Take a look at what dog trainers are charging in your area.
Read profiles of other trainers to see what qualifications they have.
Reach out to trainers who are out of your area (where there would be no competition) and ask for advice on how they got started.
