What do colleges look at when looking for students to accept ?

I am confused because I have been told by teachers and other people several different things and I just want one simple answer. I am also a freshman in high school. And I love playing lacrosse and I hope I get a scholarship.

Hello Pippa! It's fantastic to see you're already thinking about your future education. The reason you might be getting varied responses from different people is that each school values different aspects when considering student admissions. For instance, liberal arts schools typically seek students who are versatile - those who not only excel academically but also actively participate in leadership roles, clubs, volunteering, sports, music, and more. On the other hand, technical schools, while they still value well-rounded students, tend to give more weight to those who shine in their STEM subjects.

Your involvement in lacrosse is a wonderful asset! Keep up the good work both in your studies and on the field. Also, consider volunteering during the summer breaks. These efforts will significantly boost your chances of getting into some excellent schools. Keep going, Pippa, you're on the right track!

Pippa - It’s never too early to start thinking about college and creating a plan to position you favorably for admission. Colleges don’t make admissions decisions based on a single factor, but rather a combination of factors, including but not limited to GPA, difficulty of courses, leadership outside of the classroom, letters of support/recommendation and essays. The weight placed on each of these factors vary by college. Overall, they are looking for students who will do well and also make a contribution to their institution. Many are also interested in diversity in its many forms. Playing a sport, lacrosse or other, can boost your application and put you in position for a scholarship.

Karen’s Answer

Good question! Generally, colleges want students who have proven they will work hard and do well in whatever area they choose. They often look for examples of how you're a good team player, communication skills, how you have demonstrated your commitment to something (perhaps lacrosse) or participated in volunteer activities.

People may give you different responses but look for common points in what they are suggesting. Overall, if you are doing your best in all areas, you will be successful. And remember to enjoy each day!

With every good wish.
