The opportunity to apply for "major-based" scholarships may vary based on the institution you choose to attend. At the university where I completed my undergraduate studies, students were eligible to apply for multiple scholarships if they had officially declared a double major. However, those who were merely considering a double major without officially declaring it were not deemed eligible. It's worth noting that double major students often need these scholarships the most, as they typically have a heavier course load compared to those pursuing a major/minor combination, which might extend their stay beyond the usual four years. Nevertheless, there are plenty of scholarships that are not tied to a specific major. These could be based on your hometown, participation in a certain group, or affiliation with a particular demographic, and applying for these wouldn't pose any issues. So, keep your spirits high and explore all the opportunities available to you!

Scholarships vary widely. Some scholarships are awarded based on fields of study, geographic or demographic criteria, or are open to all applicants, sometimes even for the early years of (elementary) schooling and for post-graduate studies. It is helpful to reach out to your school guidance counselor, your local library or newspaper, school alumni associations, or national professional associations, who may have resources to guide you. You may be surprised to find the many resources around you. Good luck!

Hi Shan’Drea:

Scholarship applications can start to be submitted during your Junior year and will continue throughout your Senior year in high school. It is best to ask your Academic Advisor/School Counselor on the timeline process as well. Scholarship applications will have specific deadlines and requirements to meet in order to be submitted for review and consideration.

One can double major in college. Normally, it will take 4 years to earn a Bachelor degree. As a double major, it can take an extra year to earn the second college degree. The first two years of college will be general elective courses. The last two years of college will be focused and concentrated on the desired major. Thus, 2 Years (General Elective Courses) + 2 Years (Desired Major) X 2 = 5-6 Years (Double Major). When double majoring, it will be best to check the general and core courses in each major to see how certain courses can be counted towards both college degrees.

The requirements for scholarships can vary. Some scholarships will not have restrictions and one can stack scholarships together. Then, there will be other scholarships that have specific restrictions. Research will need to be done on the parameters for the scholarship requirements.

You may want to start to compile your resume/portfolio since a majority of scholarship applications will require academic grade point average (GPA), academic accomplishments, school activities (clubs, sports, etc.), community involvement (volunteer, church, etc.), academic and personal recommendations, etc. There may be essay requirements on why you are a qualified candidate to receive the scholarship, what your future goals are academically and professionally and other questions centering around who you are, your beliefs, etc.

Also, it will be best to check with the colleges and universities that you will be applying to. You can check with the School/Department of your desired major(s), the Campus Career Center and the Register's Office for additional information for college scholarships and grants and specific requirements for qualifications.

Hope this helps and best wishes for your college education!
