Great question Aariasha, A gynecologist is a physician who specializes in medicine for women. An obstetrician is a physician who cares for women who are having babies. Many physicians who specialize actually become both a gynecologist and an obstetrician. This special doctor often joins a group of other doctors who share this specialty and they work together to care for women. This is especially helpful so there is always availability for the patient of someone in the group. It also has advantages for the physician, so you can actually take a family vacation, and not need to work around the mother who is expecting her baby! When you go to medical school after your bachelor's degree, you will have the chance to learn more about LOTS of specialties: pediatrics, ob/gyn, orthopedics, emergency medicine, etc. This will help you know what you prefer.

Best of luck in your future Aariasha!

Gynecs usually have their own clients where they do a regular check-up of them and advise on delivering baby. But at times, they will have to deal with unknown patients too in case of any emergency.

Estelle’s Answer

Gynecologists generally have their own patients and practices, so you will have the opportunity to deliver your own patient's babies. In addition, you will likely take call at a hospital where you will need to deliver for women who do not have a physician. So, sometimes, you will not be familiar with the patient.
