How can you find a job in your chosen field after graduation when they all require experience?

I look at all the job postings periodically to get a sense of what type of accounting I want to do when I get my bachelor's degree. They all require experience to start. Is it really necessary to have the experience if you've earned a degree? #accounting

Hi Sandra,

My advice would be, while you're a student, do your best to take advantage of internships. Not only will they help you with a job that requires prior experience, but it also may turn into a job offer itself. Additionally, take advantage of job fairs and networking opportunities.

Hi Sandra - You do not have to have "experience" coming from college for your first accounting job. Many accounting firms recruits at universities for internships and full time positions. These positions are typically not available through public sites such as indeed or monster.com. That is why the posting you are searching for are for experienced hires! I encourage you to visit your school's career website or speak with someone from that office to understand what companies and opportunities are typically available.

Also, experience can come in many forms. If you are in college, you can tutor in accounting, do research for an accounting professor, take part time account payable jobs etc. While you don't have to have these experiences, they will help you stand out when the accounting companies come recruiting!

Kenzie’s Answer

Although there may be jobs that require some experience, there are many that do not especially in the accounting field. Many accounting firms are looking for students right out of college. These firms post these entry level positions on their own websites. If you have a couple firms that you are interested in, I would advise to go out on their websites and explore a bit and even reach out to some people in recruiting at that firm to ask what programs they offer. They will have great information for you and it is also great to start that personal connection with someone at the firm.

Kenzie recommends the following next steps:

Go to firm websites
Reach out to recruiters to make a personal connection
Stay in contact

Hi Sandra,

You can always benefit from internships and fresh graduates programme. In addition to pursuing postgraduate study (such as MBA or any professional certificate depending on the career you want to have : CMA, CFA, CPA etc). These will be a boost for you.
Make sure to have a big network of connections (university careers services, LinkedIn, recruitment companies etc).

Martha’s Answer

Hi Sandra,

While some jobs require experience, there are plenty out there that do not require you to have working experience, just a bachelors in accounting/finance.  A lot of these companies are public accounting firms and offer various jobs in tax, accounting, audit, risk assurance, etc.

I encourage you to visit various career fairs if your school/town offer them!  A lot of these companies are looking to hire students straight out of college and will recruit throughout college for various internships that then can turn into full time job offers.  Another great place to look if you are interested in becoming a public accountant is to look at the various firms websites to see if they have any job postings that you can apply to directly!
