How come trade schools aren't mentioned more often?

Whenever someone considers a path after high school it's always a four year college. I learned that trade jobs can earn you a lot of money, but trade schools that teach you how to do certain jobs are not mentioned as often as four year colleges. I want to go to a four year college but I'm also curious in how trade schools work. #trades #trade-school #technical-school

Mary’s Answer

Hi Michael. In my opinion, some people just know exactly what kind of work they want to do and go to a trade school to get the skills they need right away, whereas, when you go to a 4-year university there may still be some doubts about what you really want to focus on and it may become a journey of figuring out what you really want to do for a career. There are some businesses that mostly focus on trade schools to get the people with the skills they need. It really is up to you which path you decide upon based on what you are interested in pursuing.

Mary recommends the following next steps:

If you are seriously considering a trade school contact them directly and ask about what companies have employed their graduates. You may also find some graduates online and can get advice directly from them as well in certain online forums/reviews.

Simeon’s Answer

Trade schools tend to focus exclusively on teaching you the necessary skills to get employed as one type of job rather than the "rounder" education that is offered by a four year degree. Ironically, the very fact that not many people see trade jobs as prestigious leads to there being a greater need for people in those jobs, which drives up wages. You'll have job security for a long time getting a trade job.

Dallas’s Answer

More people are familiar with universities, they have more brand recognition. Teachers can tell you all about college (where they came from) but struggle to relate to trade school.

Most guys I know in skilled trades entered through friend/family helping them train enough to get hired in at entry positions and work up or they joined through union halls.

Trade schools are good but the guys we’ve came across typically aren’t too impressed with for how much money they said they spent. Go in with a clear focus on what you want your speciality to be and if possible find someone in the field which you can get help/advice from. Sometimes the teachers are nice, it’s good for feelings not for skill building. You need someone who will push you to be better and tell you the truth.
