How do I choose what to include on my resume?

There is so much that I can add on my resume, but I know that most employers do not read resumes if they are too long. How do I decipher what is important to include on the resume? #resume

Thank you comment icon I advise other students with their resumes at my college's career center. Keep your resume at just one page. Include a header at the top with your name and contact information. Then, you can include a profile statement (optional). Next, create an education section. After that, add sections relevant to the job you are applying to. Each of these sections (other than edu and profile) should include your role/title, the organization you were with, location, and dates involved there as well as bullet point statements that start with an action verb. There is some flexibility/individuality with resumes - the key is to keep your formatting consistent, be honest, and keep in mind the characteristics/qualifications included in the job description. The key is formatting. Lead with what is most relevant to the employers field. Start with action words. Also, think about what you want to do. What do you want your future job to look like. Lead with activities that are related to this.

In terms of education, list your major/minor and if you have completed the degree or not. School etc...
Work Experience is what I have looked at most in potential job candidates. Trying to gauge how eager someone is to learn and understand what they already know that pertains to the position I am looking to fill.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Hi! First, you do not need to include a summary or an objective. Your experiences should include 3-5 robust descriptions about relevant skills and accomplishments acquired on the job. I think any experience like internships, organizational leadership, jobs, and many other positions can be great experiences to include on your resume. Remember, not all of your experiences have to be a traditional job. You also have an opportunity to include any volunteer, awards, and education.

Also, try to give data and numbers on what you've done. So, not just "I worked on X project" but "I delivered 95 sales over a 2 month period, compared to my peers delivering 60 sales in the same time period.

A resume should have a section on education, work experience/volunteering experience, and any relevant or interesting extra curricular activities or other skills you may have. For work experience/volunteering experience, you can have short descriptions of what the work entailed – this is good to show the skills you obtained, however, ensure to keep this short and succinct. You can choose to include a mission statement (a sentence or two) at the top. Remember that resumes are a marketing document for yourself – keep it short, concise and succinct.
