Hi Breon,

I am not a veterinarian, but I'll have to see one for my cats soon.

For me, on the emotional side the hardest part would be dealing with animal abuse cases, seeing injured animals suffer e.g. animals that had an unfortunate meeting with a car, and putting animals down when I can't help them any more plus having the distraught owner and possibly the children there who need to be consoled.

On the plus side, you'll be able to help many animals who need you and make
their families happy.

Good luck!

Jeff’s Answer

Breon,

The veterinary profession, like many others, comes with its own set of challenges.

If you're an animal lover, this job can tug at your heartstrings. You'll have moments of joy when you help or even save an animal's life. But there will also be tough times when you have to tell an owner their beloved pet won't make it, or when you've done everything possible, but the animal still doesn't survive.

Moreover, the job requires a vast amount of technical knowledge, similar to other medical professions. You need to know which medicines to use and be ready to tackle complex issues, especially in emergency veterinary medicine. However, this can also be rewarding as you experience the satisfaction of diagnosing and treating a difficult case.

If you're someone who thrives on excitement, the routine nature of the job might pose a challenge. Most of your patients will be in for a yearly check-up, needing only vaccines and a basic examination, unless you work in an emergency clinic.

Despite the challenges, being a vet can be incredibly fulfilling. If you have a passion for science, problem-solving, and animals, this could be the perfect career for you.
