Paul’s Answer

Hello!

Mathematics was a breeze for me, but I've seen many of my high school buddies grapple with it. I shared with them the same advice I'm about to share with you, and it remarkably transformed their grades from average to excellent.

1) MASTER THE FUNDAMENTALS. Gaining a solid understanding of the basics is crucial. When you comprehend the underlying principles of what you're doing and the reasons behind your actions, you'll be better equipped to handle varying math problem patterns. The primary issue is that many individuals study math problems and attempt to memorize the solutions without truly understanding the reasoning behind them. Thoroughly grasp the fundamentals of each topic, and you'll be amazed at how your math performance improves subsequently.

Xiaojie Johan’s Answer

Hi Obie,

Math takes time and practice, but also patience and dedication to it. If you want to be good at math, you'll have to at least learn the basics of elementary mathematics before you get into even introductory undergraduate material. The higher level math you take, the more abstract it will get. This is from someone that has taken math courses up to the most advanced undergraduate material. You can do it!

Best of luck!

Regards,

Johan

Obie thank you for reaching out and asking your question about how you could develop your understanding of math. You should know that mastering math can be a rewarding journey, and there are various effective ways to enhance your understanding. The key is to find one that will provide you with the most information, encouragement, and knowledge. I will do my best to provide you with some best ways to learn math and advance through online courses:

I would suggest you first begin by ensuring a solid understanding of foundational concepts. Strengthen your grasp of basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Keep in mind that resources like textbooks, online tutorials, and educational websites can be valuable at this stage.

One of the things that I have always told my own children is that to be successful at math or anything else for that matter is to practice it constantly. Mathematics is a subject that benefits greatly from consistent practice. This is because solving a variety of problems to reinforce concepts and improve problem-solving skills. This can be done by utilizing workbooks, online exercises, and math apps for regular practice.

Another way as you have noted are via Online Courses. These types of courses offer a flexible and accessible way to learn math. There are many platforms or sites that you can access, but to me platforms like Khan Academy, Coursera, and edX provide structured courses covering a wide range of math topics. The do include video lectures, interactive quizzes, and opportunities for self-paced learning. However not all of them are interactive where you can ask questions.

That brings me to Interactive Learning Tools and/or applications, which explore making learning math engaging. These would be websites and apps like Desmos, GeoGebra, or Wolfram Alpha provide interactive graphs, simulations, and problem-solving features.

One thing you could consider is seeking help from a math tutor or joining study groups. This could be someone at your existing school or someone you find online via tutoring sites. Like I said interacting with peers and getting personalized guidance can provide additional perspectives and support.

Lastly, you should consider connecting math to real-world applications. This means understanding how mathematical concepts are applied in various fields can make the subject more interesting and relevant.

You did ask why online courses might be preferable and here are some reasons why I think they are:

• Online courses allow you to learn at your own pace and schedule, accommodating different learning styles and preferences.
• Online platforms often provide a wealth of resources, including video lectures, practice problems, and interactive materials, enhancing the learning experience.
• Online courses often incorporate multimedia elements, making the learning process more dynamic and engaging.
• With online courses, you can access top-notch educational content from anywhere in the world, providing a broad range of perspectives and approaches to learning.

Obie, you should remember that ultimately, the choice of learning method depends on your personal preferences and needs. Combining online courses with hands-on practice and interactive tools can create a well-rounded approach to mastering math.
