Do you have any resources for identifying different types of jobs after receiving a degree in finance

I will be attending a college in Michigan to obtain a degree in Finance, but I am not for certain what all type of jobs would be available in that field, other than financial services. I am curious to see what else I might be able to do with this degree.

Great question. There are many resources on the web that can provide ideas on where a finance degree can take you...investopedia.com , is one resource. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your academic advisor or with the office of Professional Development, should your college offer this resource. Higher education institutions have many resources, so take advantage.

During my years in college I had no idea of the range of career opportunities open to those with a degree in Finance, so great question! From my experience in high tech I have included below multiple opportunities.

- FP&A, financial planning and analysis where one supports month end close activities (reviewing actuals, booking accruals, etc.) and reporting, forecasting and budget planning.
- Treasury, where one supports cash planning, debt management, foreign exchange contracts for hedging, investment management, pension management, risk management, etc.
- Strategy, M&A where one supports acquisitions of new companies via analysis/valuation of potential targets, as well as analysis of new business opportunities
- Internal audit, where one investigates internal team compliance with internal financial policies
- Related areas in Operations for a business or global function, where one supports vendor management for contracts, purchase orders, actual spend review, and forecasting planning
There are plenty more opportunities. The above are simply a sample!

W Elliot’s Answer

I understand your question because I was not sure what career, or major, to pursue what I started business school. There are many areas of finance and there are many resources you will have once you start college. First, you will have your coursework, with different classes like Business Financial Management, Financial Markets & Institutions, Principles of Investing, and Real Estate Finance. These can help you identify what interests you and potential career opportunities. Second, you will have career center advisors, professors and upper classmen that you can use as resources. Third, you could consider internships to gain experience in different fields. I think it is great that you are already focused on developing a career plan. It's never too early to start. And that will give you more time to plan and adjust along the way. My path took a few turns. I started as an accounting major, did one internship in commercial banking, then another internship in insurance. My coursework in finance interested me the most, so I added a major in finance, and chose a job in investment banking.
