First, start self-publishing right away. Create social media accounts and a blog to share your work. Engage with your audience on platforms like Reddit and others. The sports world thrives online, so building your presence there is crucial. By showcasing your skills, you'll have a portfolio ready when opportunities arise.
Second, seek mentors who can guide and support you. Look for places that offer more than just a byline, such as school newspapers or local publications. These environments can help you grow as a writer. Being part of a community or club can also provide valuable experience and connections.

Noah,
What a great goal! I love sports and read many articles online about my favorite teams - sports writing is so important.
I always tell young writers to begin their careers by finding their niche, so you're one step ahead of many people your age. The next goal you want to focus on is getting published as much as possible. When you apply for a job in any writing field, they will ask about your published work and for writing samples. If you're headed to college here soon, get a job at the school newspaper. See if you can move into the sports section. From there, internships hold so much value on a resume. Check out online publications that may need an intern for featured stories. These elements will provide you with real experience for when you're in a job interview with ESPN. :)
Good luck! Can't wait to see your name under the headlines for the next Pac-12 championship review.
