First-generation scholarships?

I’m a first generation college student seeking scholarships. It seems there’s been a decline in scholarships awarded for that purpose and was wondering if anybody knows a really good website for them. Thanks!

Hi Amanda!

Congrats on being a first-generation college student! I was also the first in my family to go to college. I personally used scholarships.com (they have just about every scholarship you could hope for) and unigo.com. I also know that Rhode Island has The Patty and Melvin Alperin First Generation Scholarship.

Besides those you can also check if the specific college you are interested in offers first-generation scholarships.

Thank you comment icon Hi Amanda- Collegeboard.com has various scholarships that will apply to you, I'd give their website a read through, it was helpful to me when applying for scholarships. Lorena Mejia

Ashley’s Answer

Hi Amanda,

I too was a first generation college student. It can be intimidating to navigate uncharted waters. A great first step is making sure your FAFSA information is up-to-date and correct. This step will qualify for financing such as the typical loans or pell grants. Additionally, I recommend looking into if your choice university has a TRIO program. My university had a TRIO program in which I was able to take advantage of resources like free tutoring, financial literacy, and grant funding. There is also more information through the U.S. Department of Education. Local organizations sometimes also provide additional scholarship funds.

Fastweb.com has always been an amazing resource. Also although not openly advertised many colleges offer first generation scholarships, contact the colleges that fall in your top three selection and ask the advisor for more information. They should be able to guide your from that point.
