Cheri’s Answer

Hello Natalie,

The income of a physical therapist can greatly fluctuate based on your geographical location and your place of work. Typically, the initial salary for a newly qualified physical therapist ranges from $60,000 to $70,000. Interestingly, choosing to work in less populated areas may result in higher pay. Conversely, areas with universities offering PT doctoral programs may offer lower salaries due to the abundance of therapists available.

The field of physical therapy offers a variety of work environments, making it an exciting career choice. Throughout your journey, you can opt to explore different settings, adding diversity and challenges to your career. Some therapists specialize in working with children with developmental disabilities or athletes in recovery from injuries. Others may choose to work in hospitals, assisting patients recovering from strokes or spinal cord injuries, and helping them regain mobility. The opportunities in this field are vast and varied.

If physical therapy piques your interest, it's beneficial to volunteer at a clinic. Most clinics welcome individuals to shadow therapists for a day or two, providing a glimpse into a day in the life of a therapist. Larger clinics, particularly those within hospitals, may even offer regular volunteer schedules. Physical therapy is a demanding profession that requires significant time and education. Consequently, most schools mandate volunteer hours as a prerequisite for application, making this experience invaluable.

I truly believe if you have a passion for helping people and you don't mind going to school for you doctorate ,you will not be disappointed. However, if you are choosing this career path solely on the salary, keep looking . Spend time shadowing or volunteering with a PT to see exactly what is involved.
Thank you comment icon Hi Margaret, great suggestion! Can you give Natalie insight on the different types of physical therapy? Sharyn Grose, Admin

Troy’s Answer

Depends on if you work for yourself or others. My career salary range has been 60 to 100 thousand. I could have made more by owning my own practice but I never wanted to do that. I have always prioritized spending time with my kids and their activities. My advice is work hard and save as much as you can before you have kids, then throttle back some when you do.
