I would say going to college shows you the path and will let you explore the latest tech and practices that you might like. Computer Science is a very broad term, it has a lot of things inside it and college will let you explore it. So I would say college is a good start but if you know what you want already then I would say do both.

Absolutely! Having a solid education is a great foundation for any career. However, that doesn't mean you can't start gaining experience in your chosen field right away. In fact, getting hands-on experience is one of the best ways to grow and advance. Best of luck to you!

I completely agree that a combination of formal education and practical experience is often the most effective route. Having a major in computer science can indeed serve as a valuable stepping stone into the field. Particularly for entry-level positions where competition is fierce, a computer science degree can set you apart from other candidates. Moreover, the technical knowledge gained through such a program can greatly aid in navigating the interview process, which frequently includes technical assessments.

My 2 cents:

1 : Opting for a major in computer science while simultaneously seeking internships can offer a balanced approach. By doing so, you not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also gain hands-on experience, providing a solid foundation for your career. This approach allows you to begin working while completing your studies, maximizing your opportunities for growth and development.

2 : You start doing online courses, bootcamp etc and you start applying for junior roles like IT support, junior programmer. As a recruiter I have seen this as the most efficient way cause you are getting an income and that experience at the same time. In the meantime I would start that major as well.
I would also target smaller companies like starts up and scale ups where they more open on the experience but also it is easier to get promoted and wear different hat in one role, gaining that expertise and rapid career advancement!

You should do both. College is the best route that you can pursue if your asking the question of what you should do. Successful tech founders that dropped out of college to pursue making some of the biggest tech giants in the world like Mark Zuckerberg only did so because they had a business they were already doing that required more time than they could give to also pursue an education.

College is the best opportunity that you can do for yourself in order to network and find unique opportunities that would not be available to you if you decide to do a self taught route.
