Christine’s Answer

Social work is a very demanding but rewarding carrer. The most important thing w to be able to live your life maintains a balance between work and the rest of your life. Professional associations ,colleagues, and in service training assist professional social workers with this.

Angela’s Answer

Hi Tianna:

I've worked in the social services field for over 20 years and for me, the hardest thing is seeing so much more need than there are resources and having to turn families/youth away from services for lots of different reasons (i.e. doesn't meet eligibility criteria, lack of funding, etc.).

I agree that the hours are long and often times the work is intense so burn-out is a real concern but that's common in many other professions as well. I think social work may be unique in the constant interactions with people, often in high need and stress. These types of interactions often impacts you and how to manage those stressors and feelings in a healthy manner is an important skill to master.

Hope this helps,

angela
