Chiming in from 2026 :)

So I myself am not in auto-body, but my dad owned two auto body shops over his 50-year career in the field. His response to this question is:

“You don’t necessarily need to go to a four-year college to work in auto body repair. Hands-on experience is crucial in this field. If you’re interested, going to a technical school like Vantage for auto body repair is a great option because it teaches you the fundamentals, safety procedures, and basic repair techniques.

At the same time, I strongly recommend getting a part-time job at an auto body shop while you’re in school. You will learn more on the job than you ever could just sitting in a classroom. Working alongside an experienced auto body repair technician allows you to see real-world repairs and pick up skills that only come with practice. There are many people in the field whose experience can contribute greatly to your education.

Auto body repair is all about attention to detail and patience. You can’t rush the work. Go slow when you’re working on cars, take your time, and make sure each step is done correctly. Doing it right the first time is always better than rushing and having to redo it. If you focus on quality and take pride in your work, you’ll build a strong reputation and have a successful career.”

It really depends on where you want your career to go long term. If you want to own or run a shop one day that college maybe helpful. There often are two year Associate Degree programs like https://www.ohiotech.edu/programs/collision-repair-refinishing/ and https://www.unoh.edu/academics/college-of-applied-technologies/automotive-technology.html may help get you on that path. To run a business having accounting and management classes could help.

I would contact local autobody shops and ask them what they're looking for in new hires. Some may have apprentice type programs or could tell you where you could get some hands-on experience.
