what was college like?

I want to know what its like

Thank you comment icon You won’t know until you get there. When I got there, I had no idea what I was getting into. I had to work two jobs to pay my way. And I worked really hard. But I found so much joy in my university experience. I volunteered. I joined groups. I put myself out there. I was a shy person, but I pushed myself. And I, to this day, have friends that I met then. And I graduated college in 1976. Put yourself out there. You won’t regret it. Marylou DiFilippo

Jerome’s Answer

I had a decent experience. You are going to get out of it what you put into it!

Join clubs and study groups. Get out and participate in events and don't be afraid to get out there.

The one regret that I have is not networking enough. Have a LinkedIn set up and connect, connect, connect.

Doc’s Answer

Daniel the relationships you make while in college can last a lifetime. Your friends can support and encourage you along the way, whether it be in your studies or in life in general. In addition, getting connected with those who are on a similar paths as you can bring networking opportunities, whether it be now or in the future. College is also a great place to meet people who come from different backgrounds and have different perspectives.

Furthermore, there are many benefits that come with building relationships with your professors also. As experienced individuals in your field of interest, your professors can provide great advice throughout your college journey. In addition, they can be a great resource once you graduate and when you are seeking employment, as they may be able to connect you with alumni in the field and be a reference when you apply for positions in your major.

Always stay connected

Martha’s Answer

Great question, Daniel! I agree with Nyair that everyone's experience is different, but my experience was thrilling, challenging, fulfilling, and fun - sometimes more than characteristic at the same time.
As the others have said, it was thrilling to learn so much both inside the classroom and outside it in dorms and extra-curricular activities. I loved getting to know people from all over the world and feeling much more independence.
It was also challenging sometimes from dealing with health issues on my own and learning how to manage a lot more schoolwork with higher standards for writing and critical thinking. Sometimes dealing with people unlike me was challenging, too.
Realizing how much I could do on my own was fulfilling as was mastering new subjects and seeing improvements in my output.
Looking back, I could have done a better job at including fun in my college experience. I always felt that I should study more, but have since learned that sometimes taking a break is important, too. But I loved late night talks in the form and made friends that have lasted a long time. I have even made new friends through alumni activities, reunions, and social media.
I hope that this perspective helps and wish you good luck!

Nyair’s Answer

Hello Daniel,

I attended both a community college and a university. Surprisingly, both had many opportunities for socialization and fun! Everyone's college journey is unique, but prepare to do a lot of studying and managing your time to make sure you can have fun.

With care,
Nyair
