Along with those excellent tips posted already, I'd add this from the perspective of someone who's been a journalist for nearly 40 years: Think about a career arc as a journalist, particularly as it comes to developing your skills and growing your income. Oftentimes, the best way for a writer to get paid more is to become an editor, but that's not for everyone. If writing (and other forms of content creation) is your main goal, don't take a non-writing (or light-writing) gig just for the $$.
You could start out working on the school newspaper/website for no pay, move to some freelance gigs for some pay and get the bylines and experience you need to find a full-time job. Even if that doesn't pay much, you'll gain a ton of experience while also keeping your eye on what's next. Say you find out you love long-form writing and have some good clips to snag a few magazine projects, you can then parlay those clips into something like working on white papers or e-books for a big corporation. That can be real money, but you could also take those same clips and build a freelance career that includes fun magazine stories with corporate freelance work that pays more even if it's a bit dry. And when thinking of magazine or other publications, don't start pitching The Atlantic right away; many cities and towns have glossy mags that need writers, ranging from a local house & home pub to the 'what to do in XX' print pubs.
