Software engineering courses usually fall under Computer Science degrees. I have seen some universities also offer software engineering courses in the Electrical and Computer Engineering path as well.
IT diplomas will usually tech some basics of programming and general computer science without going into serious detail about software engineering.

Thank you comment icon thank u so much Mr. Iliya Koreshev this been very informative Satyajit
Thank you comment icon sir after compeletion of IT diploma one can go in software engineering or not...... because I took addmission in it diploma in bc cannada and now it is not possible to change....pls do reply.... Satyajit
Thank you comment icon Yes that is definitly possible. In fact you might even be able to get some or all of your couurses you take for the IT degree counted as part of a CS degree. If you're talking about not getting a CS degree at all then you also have options to become a software engineer just expcet that it would be much harder to get callbacks from larger companies since they might filter out your application for not having a full CS/ECE degree. Steve’s Answer

Hi Satyajit,
Get the degree you like. It will depend on the college as to what will transfer or not. What counts the most is what you can show you did to demonstrate your skills and motivation for the job. Start thinking about side projects or volunteer work. This will help you stand out. Many people I work with in IT have various degrees. Some have no degree and are very skilled! But, you are on the right track! A degree is always a good investment. Good Luck!

Thank you comment icon thank you so much sir....will prove myself.. Satyajit

Mandeep’s Answer

Software Engineering - The goal here is to train you to write you new software or enable new business use cases by writing/using/maintaining software. You will learn the fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, networking, operating system, The intent is to go in-depth about these subjects. The jobs you land will actually require these skills.

IT Diploma - You will have basic knowledge of the subjects mentioned in the above paragraph. Mostly operation know-how but depth might not be required. Most required skills might be scripting in languages like python/bash etc and. The job you will land into will help the customers use the technology. You might be installing software/hardware and/or enabling the user to use any cloud technology. Troubleshooting is a very important skill here. Less time commitment is required compared to Software engineeering.
