What are the ups and downs of an author, and how do I actually make money while being one?

I'm currently in middle school, and ever since I was little I loved books and started writing my first book when I was about six, and I wanted to know what are the ups and downs of writing a book, and how do I actually make money while being one, would it be as fun and enjoyable as I think it will be?
