What is the biggest challenge you had to overcome to get to where you are now professionally? How did you overcome it?

I work in Financial Services. In 2008 my bank sold to another, larger bank in the wake of the credit crisis. Jobs were scarce and I had a son to support. I decided that no matter what, I was going to make it through. I worked 3 jobs until I found a consulting position which eventually led to a new career path. When challenges hit, decide to persevere, build yourself up mentally, physically and emotionally and take one day at a time. Decide to stay positive no matter what the circumstances are. Rise above the circumstances so you can see the way ahead. Find a mentor. Stand on the shoulders of "giants" around you - people who can encourage and uplift. There is always hope if you choose to see it! Today, I have an amazing job and work with wonderful people. It's the experiences I gained during the tough times that led me to this role. Keep going. Defy the odds. Step up!

In layperson terms, what do you actually do at work?

My company provides access to credit for working families. Together with my team, we work with mortgage companies to provide money so people can buy a home. It's exciting and energizing and extremely rewarding. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for home ownership to all working individuals and working families with good credit.
