Hi Markson:

Before going to bed the night before, it is best to make a list of events, meetings, classes, etc. to help out with a challenging schedule. This list can be entered into your calendar on your smartphone and have it synchronized to your laptop. For important events, an alarm on your smartphone can be set up to remind you of upcoming appointments, tests, quizzes, etc.

Also, on the night before, one can prepare clothing, meals and backpack with books, laptop and other materials to be utilized the next day. Organization is key to minimize stress and to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. One should get at least 6-8 hours of sleep on the night before.

When morning arrives, review your list and calendar entries. To get the day started, light exercises should be done to get the energy levels going like going for a run, stretching out, lifting weights, etc. or a visit to the college gym. Upon getting cleaned up, a good, healthy breakfast will help one to focus throughout the day. A glass of milk, a bowl of granola or cereal, fruit, bagels and such will help maintain one's energy levels. Pack small bags of nuts or pack granola bars to have something to snack on between classes and get you through the day before lunch.

Throughout the day, periodically check your calendar to mark off achieved items and to enter new events and dates. Evening should be a good dinner meal before or after studying. Prepare again for the next day ... rinse and repeat.

Hope this helps and best wishes for your college education and future career endeavors!

Good Day Markson!

First Thing to Do Every Morning in College

When considering what the first thing should be done every morning in a college setting, it is essential to recognize that this can vary based on individual preferences, institutional culture, and specific academic requirements. However, there are several common practices that many students find beneficial for starting their day effectively.

1. Wake Up Early

The first step is to wake up early enough to allow time for personal preparation and mental readiness. This typically means getting out of bed at least an hour before any classes or commitments begin. Waking up early helps students avoid the stress of rushing and allows them to start their day with a calm mindset.

2. Morning Routine

After waking up, establishing a consistent morning routine is crucial. This may include:

Personal Hygiene: Taking a shower, brushing teeth, and dressing appropriately for the day.
Healthy Breakfast: Eating a nutritious breakfast is vital as it provides energy and improves concentration throughout the morning classes. Foods rich in protein and whole grains are often recommended.
3. Review Daily Schedule

Once ready, students should take a moment to review their daily schedule. This includes checking class times, assignments due, and any meetings or extracurricular activities planned for the day. Being aware of what lies ahead can help prioritize tasks effectively.

4. Prepare Materials

Before heading out, it’s important to gather all necessary materials such as textbooks, notebooks, laptops, and any other supplies needed for classes or study sessions. Ensuring everything is organized can prevent last-minute scrambles.

5. Mindfulness or Exercise

Incorporating mindfulness practices such as meditation or light exercise can greatly enhance focus and reduce anxiety levels. Even a short session of stretching or yoga can invigorate the body and mind.

6. Commute to Campus

Finally, allowing sufficient time for commuting to campus is essential. Whether walking, biking, driving, or using public transport, arriving on time reduces stress and sets a positive tone for the day ahead.

In summary, while there may not be one universally prescribed “first thing” that must be done every morning in college, following these steps—waking up early, maintaining a morning routine that includes hygiene and nutrition, reviewing schedules, preparing materials, engaging in mindfulness or exercise practices—can significantly contribute to a productive start each day.

Top 3 Authoritative Sources Used:

American Psychological Association (APA): The APA provides extensive research on the importance of routines in enhancing productivity and mental health among students.

Harvard Health Publishing: Offers insights into how nutrition impacts cognitive function and academic performance among college students.

National Sleep Foundation: Discusses the significance of sleep patterns on student performance and well-being in an academic environment.

Angel’s Answer

The first thing to do in the morning at college is to prioritize a productive and focused start to your day. This could involve reviewing your schedule to plan the day, setting clear goals, or getting organized. A good practice is to begin with a quick review of any assignments or notes you need to go over before classes. If possible, start with a healthy breakfast and a brief physical activity to boost energy and focus for the day ahead.

TRAVIS’s Answer

Hello Markson,
I heard a graduation speech that offered some great advice on that matter. But your alarm clock or phone alarm that will wake you up in the morning in the bathroom each night. That way you are forced to get out of bed in order to turn it off. That way you cant hit the snooze button from the comfort of your bed. This will help you get the day started and be able to stay punctual. Good luck, you will do well.

Daniella’s Answer

Hi Markson! This will depend on the person and what kind of schedule you have in college. Are you a morning person? Are you a night owl? Personally, I found developing a routine in college helped keep me on track. On days where I had morning classes, I made sure to eat breakfast before going to class to make sure I was fueled and ready for class. On days where classes started later, I liked to start my morning off with a workout because I knew I wouldn't have the energy to do so after class.

Make sure to carve enough time to get to class 5-10 min early to grab a good seat and get yourself situated. Find a routine that works for you and stick to it! But also don't give yourself a hard time if you have to deviate every once in awhile. Good luck in college!
