Crystal’s Answer

Be mindful to make your feeling known on every level. Discuss the specifics of why you feel that way directly with said person, as well as, those above them. Also make your concerns in writting to formalize your concern. Your feeling are important and deserve to be heard on every level.

Sarah’s Answer

Hello Brielle,

Most colleges and universities, especially public ones, will have a complaint procedure you can follow if this ever happens to you (and I pray it doesn't!). Typically, it involves filing a complaint to that professor's department or to your college's diversity officer or multicultural office. You will also fill out an evaluation form at the end of every semester for all your professors. These evaluations are super important to a professor's or instructor's career in academia, and you are encouraged to share that kind of information on those forms. If you do, I guarantee you that department will launch an investigation into that professor's behavior.

Hope this helps!

Sarah recommends the following next steps:

Research your college's complaint procedures.

Elle’s Answer

I handled this situation by playing the game. I gave him exactly what he wanted and got exactly what I wanted. Most professors like to hear themselves think and reflect only on their own ideas. Especially at liberal arts colleges. So do what you need to pass the course with top marks and do your best to document whatever is inappropriate if it gets to that point. But trust me, most professors are ego maniacs and love to hear their own ideas spouted back at them. So don't take it personally, because odds are they are biased against other students too. All you can do is your best.

Rose’s Answer

Hi Brielle,

I so agree with Elle, always handle the situation by playing the game. Deal with your professor accordingly by giving him exactly what he wants while getting exactly what you need from the class. Handle your business and do what you need to pass the course with the top if not exceeding marks! If there's ever a situation where something inappropriate happens, document immediately and report! Do your best and keep working at your goals and don't let anyone stop or stumble you.
