"Navigating the early stages of a legal career can be challenging. Many law firms prioritize experience, yet there are opportunities available for recent graduates. It's essential to research firms that value potential and provide entry-level positions. Networking and internships can also enhance your visibility and expertise. Remember, every accomplished lawyer started somewhere. Stay persistent and open-minded!"

Gavin it is great that you already have chosen a career path. One way to get your foot in the door could be to contact local law firms and see if they would be interested in taking you on as an intern. That way you could familiarize yourself with how the day to day office works and maybe even get to join them in a court session. Start now so it would also look great on your college applications.

Hi Gavin - Some law firms may have internship opportunities for pre-law school students. Otherwise, you could consider working as an office assistant at a firm. Another way to get your foot in the door would be to join clubs and/organizations that have connections to law firms and help build your resume. For example, if your school has a mock trial team it may be coached by a lawyer with connections to other lawyers and knowledge of law-related opportunities. If you are passionate about a particular cause (e.g., environment, immigration, criminal justice) you could consider pursuing volunteer/advocacy opportunities as a way to network with the lawyers who are also engaged in issue. Given the lack of structured opportunities for pre-law students to work at law firms, networking is key!
Good luck!

Hi Gavin,
I had the same issue as you too! I had always wanted to work in law firms in Silicon Valley after I completed my JD. I had applied to many legal jobs online and I came across a few that are willing to train. There was no experience needed. I got the job and many others after that. I found that if you spend time tweaking your resume for legal jobs and make the resume relevant to the job posting you will succeed!

Hello, Gavin !
One thing is for sure, you are going to learn exactly how you'll get your first job as part of the Law School experience. If you are still in high school and have not started undergraduate school yet, it's only natural that you may be wondering about this.
There are three main experiences you would have in Law School that will give you an opportunity to be interviewed for your first job out of Law School. The first is through On-Campus Interviews. This is when Law Firms come to the school to interview prospective attorneys for an opening at their firm or possible internships. These firms look for candidates with a high GPA and work experience. You may be able to get some work experience through four years of undergraduate Work Study Program. You also may get work opportunities connected to Law in Law School.
Next, you may be able to obtain a job through networking events at your Law School. You should attend as many as they offer. Sometimes these are dinners or awards events, etc., it depends on the Law School, but you will need to mingle at these events and get the Law firms attending to get to know you.
The next way you can get a job out of Law School is through Internships offered by your Law School. You're going to naturally become aware of these opportunities as a student. So when you look at the different Law Schools to choose where to apply to, find out and compare which ones have the best career placement services for their students. But right now, you should focus on your high school courses and look into which University you should apply to. While at University, you will learn more about Law School and things will fall in line for you.
Also in undergraduate school for your Bachelors Degree, you will probably figure out what type of law you're interested in practicing and that will guide you as to where to seek experience.
Like all other careers, becoming a Lawyer is a process - 7 years to be exact. You just have to take each step one at a time and let things flow naturally. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best !
