I want to be a zookeeper or maybe a fashion-designer, but I love both and can't choose. How can I find a way to do both, and is it even possible ?

I am in love with animals, but I love designing as well. If you have any other info or anything to help, i'd love to hear it.

Hi Zoey,

It’s awesome that you have two exciting passions! And I should totally tell you, believe it or not, you can find ways to blend both interests or pursue them side by side.
I got some ideas which actually might give you a landing hit so you can see through which interests you to take.

1. You can Create designs inspired by wildlife! Many designers use animal patterns or themes in their work. You could design animal-themed clothes or even create work uniforms for zookeepers that are both stylish and functional. ✨🦍

2. Or you can totally Design accessories for animals, like cozy blankets, pet clothes, or even gear for zoo animals. Some designers specialize in practical animal care fashion.

3. Another way is working as a zookeeper full-time while doing custom fashion projects on the side. Yep, Many fashion designers start small by creating items in their free time and then you can reduce full time to part job and carry that building business and Design!

4. You can always and always Use your designs to raise awareness for animal conservation. 😌 Fashion brands often collaborate with zoos or wildlife foundations to support endangered animals. I Mena who wouldn't want some Amazon designs by Zoey the great designer to save some endangered animals? 🥰

So Zoey byy staying creative and open-minded, you can follow both passions in unique and meaningful ways! All the best and go design and rock it! 😎😉

Dr recommends the following next steps:

Explore zookeeper programs while learning to sew and design.
Start a small fashion project inspired by animals—maybe even sell your creations online.
Look for internships in both fields to experience each career firsthand.
Thank you comment icon Thank you, I'll definitely keep all of this in mind! I love the idea to help with animal conservation and doing part-time fashion. Both ideas I may choose. Your advice was really helpful. zoey
Thank you comment icon Amazing, Zoey! Following both passions could be incredible—fashion with a purpose and conservation with style. Stay open to new opportunities, and let your creativity lead the way! Dr H

Hello,

This feels familiar to me. I'm a Technical Designer in Fashion School now, but I first wanted to be a Veterinarian.

Here's why I chose fashion:

1. The Vet Tech Program was tougher than I thought, and I struggled to keep straight A's.
2. My love for animals came from caring for my pets, not from wanting to do surgeries or study medicine for years.
3. I realized how much time I spent drawing and making clothes, and how much my high school teachers praised my fashion skills. I had overlooked something I both enjoyed and was good at.

If I became a Veterinarian, fashion would probably be a hobby. Not everything you love has to be a career, but your career should be something you enjoy and want to build. You can still do all the things you love; it's about finding the right place for them in your life.

I hope this helps.

Hello, Zoey !

You have such wonderful career interests for which I would be happy to advise you on.

You would not be able to do professional Fashion Design as well as a career as a Zookeeper at the same time. It's okay, you can take your time choosing and you can also do one of those careers while doing one of them as a pass time or volunteering when you have the time. Both as careers will demand all of your time. So your first step is to decide to be an Animal Science Major or to go to Fashion School for a degree in Fashion Design. Sometimes we have a lot of interests and can't have a career in all of them. But there is a way to be involved with both.

A career as a Zookeeper will require physical stamina and you may have a long commute to your job. It would be very enjoyable but you wouldn't have the time or energy to dedicate what it takes to be a Fashion Designer while working as a Zookeeper. You'd have time for sewing that you could do when you have the time. I would suggest that you start making a lot of clothes for yourself and wear them. If people compliment the clothes, tell them that you could make one for them and charge a price. Once you have a sort of inventory of things you've designed and made, make a website and sell your clothes online. For even this, you may not be able to do it everyday. There may be time when, as a Zookeeper, you may have to travel, attend trainings and conferences and do research. So you'll have to work fashion in some way that you can keep both commitments.

You can also consider becoming a Stylist which doesn't require a college degree. Style looks for family and friends and compile a portfolio. Advertise your service as a Stylist and do it when you have time. Even Stylists can be quite busy, juggling clients and you'd have to have the schedule for it.

Other things to consider are that there are like two Zoos in or near Newnan, Georgia. With Fashion Design, after Fashion School, you can have your own business freelancing. Sewing, fitting, advertising, network and attending industry events takes a lot of time and energy. If you choose Fashion Design, you could probably volunteer at an Animal Shelter or pet hospital.

So there's a way to work in both, but I would recommend doing one as a career and the other as volunteer work or a sometimes sideline. Give it a bit more time and when you are ready to commit to one, you will make a good decision for your future.

Best wishes in all you do !

Dear Zoey,
It is wonderful that you are interested in animals and fashion designers.
If you just love animals you can spend your leisure time with them and do some volunteer jobs in zoo and try to learn fashion designing as well. Fashion designing is a perfect and exciting job and you can learn a lot from it.

Dear Zoey,

I think striving to be a zookeeper and fashion-designer are both great career ideas. To do both at the same time, I think you could go towards a method where you use your zookeeper experience to create products for animals such as blankets, pet clothing (ex. dog sweaters or cat pajamas), or animal care protective clothing (ex. protective shoes or clothes for animals).
