How should I go about getting a summer job-shadow in High School?
I'd like to apply for a job-shadow this summer and don't know where to start. I'd just like to learn the basics of a few jobs I'm interested in and see if I'd actually like to pursue them in the future. Any tips?

Hey Elayna, 😎
So, you’re ready to dive into the world of job-shadowing, huh? Well, That’s awesome! Because it’s a great way to figure out what you really want to do. I should say, Diana’s got a solid idea with looking at big companies like Marriott for internships or summer gigs. But hey, you can totally make it your own adventure as well.
1. Local Businesses = Hidden Gems: Don’t sleep on your own backyard! Take a look around your community. Think about places that get you excited—whether it’s a cool tech company, a local art gallery, or even a neighborhood cafe. Go on their website or just give ‘em a call. You never know when you’ll find an opportunity just by asking. Plus, small businesses might be super flexible and open to helping you out!
2. Don’t be shy to hit up your family, friends, or even that one aunt you don’t talk to much but totally works at a cool job. Ask them if they know someone who could let you shadow for a day. People love helping out passionate students, and you might end up getting an insider hookup.
3. School = Your Secret Weapon: Seriously, your school is like the hidden treasure chest of career connections. Go to your guidance counselor and ask them if they know anyone or any programs for job-shadowing. They might have some leads you never even thought of.
4. The Online World: If you’re all about clicking buttons, get yourself on sites like LinkedIn or Indeed and start typing “job shadowing” or “high school internship.” Sometimes, the world’s biggest companies post opportunities there! You can even set up email alerts so you’re the first to know when something good pops up.
5. Just Ask!: Honestly, one of the best moves is just to ask. Shoot an email or make a quick phone call to companies that interest you. Let them know you’re a curious high school student eager to learn about what they do. Worst case, they say no. Best case? You get a chance to hang out with a pro for a day and soak up all that knowledge. Win-win.
6. Virtual Vibes: Can’t make it in person? No worries! There are virtual internships and job-shadowing opportunities out there. You can sit at home, sipping your coffee, while watching what a professional does all day. Not quite the same as in-person, but still pretty rad.
The key is just being bold, curious, and open to exploring. Don’t wait around—start emailing, calling, or texting. You never know when a cool opportunity is gonna pop up! Stay positive, stay persistent, and soon enough, you’ll be job-shadowing like a pro. Good luck!

Summer jobs are fantastic opportunities to learn about your interests. I was looking at the main Marriott employment page. Under careers there is an entry level tab and it lists summer internships /paid. Any major hotel chain job listings board has this.
What is great about hotels- flexible schedules, transferable skills, opportunities all around the world depending on the hotel chain, jobs from entry level all the way to top executive management.
Have a fun summer!

Elayna,
Diana and Dr. H gave solid advice. Now, act on it. Identify companies you're interested in, write a clear, direct email, and ask for a shadowing opportunity. No waiting, no second-guessing — just reach out.
If you want a chance, go take it.
