Dr’s Answer

Hey Julio, great question! Richard shared that he enjoys strategy consulting because it’s problem-solving with like-minded people, but the long hours and stress can be a challenge. Kazi highlighted how different careers have their ups and downs—doctors earn well but face burnout, teachers find fulfillment despite lower pay, and engineers have great salaries but deal with pressure and deadlines.

One way to approach this is to think beyond just pros and cons—what excites you? What problems do you enjoy solving? Every career has trade-offs, but the right one aligns with what matters most to you. If you like working with your hands, careers like welding, HVAC, and automotive can be rewarding, offering job security and solid pay. If you value creativity and innovation, engineering or even specialized trades might be a great fit.

Remember, pros and cons of a career really depend on the field, personal preferences, and work environment. So, Here’s a general breakdown based on my experience in multiple industries: hope it helps but I recommend you figuring out your interests first Julio!

Healthcare (Doctor, Medical Assistant, etc.)

Pros:
High job stability and demand
Fulfilling work—helping people directly
Intellectual challenge and continuous learning
Good earning potential in the long run

Cons:
Long and intense education/training
High stress and emotional burden
Long working hours and potential burnout
Expensive education costs
Business & Entrepreneurship

Pros:
Freedom to create and innovate
Unlimited income potential
Flexibility and independence
Constant growth and learning opportunities

Cons:
High risk and financial uncertainty
No guaranteed income (especially at the start)
Heavy responsibility—success depends on you
Can be time-consuming and stressful
Marketing & Management

Pros:
Creativity and strategy combined
High demand in many industries
Opportunities to work remotely or freelance
Constantly evolving field (never boring!)

Cons:
Competitive field
Results aren’t always immediate (trial & error)
Can be stressful with tight deadlines
Requires continuous upskilling to stay relevant

Julio, A good step forward is to explore firsthand—shadow a professional, take an introductory course, or even do hands-on projects. The more you experience, the clearer your path will become. No career is perfect, but the right one will make the challenges worth it. Keep exploring, and you’ll find the best fit for you! All the best! 😎

Dr recommends the following next steps:

Start by reaching out to professionals in the fields you're considering and ask for an informational interview. A simple conversation with someone already working in the industry can give you insights, clear doubts, and even open doors to opportunities you wouldn’t have known about. Networking early can help you understand the real pros and cons beyond what’s commonly discussed, and you might even find a mentor to guide you as you take your next steps.
Thank you comment icon Dr. H gave the best advice: find what excites you and explore firsthand. Shadow professionals, take courses, and talk to people in the field. No career is perfect Mr. Trish
Thank you comment icon Appreciate that, Mr. Trish! Career decisions are like trying on shoes—gotta walk around in them to see if they fit. Shadowing, learning, and exploring? That’s the best way to avoid blisters down the road! Dr H

Richard’s Answer

I'm a strategy consultant, and I love solving problems and working with people who share my interests. The pay is great, but the hours are really long, and it can be demanding and stressful.

In the end, it's important to think about what you want in life, the problems you want to solve, and how work fits into your priorities. For example, are you okay with working 60 hours a week if it means earning a lot? There's no right or wrong answer—it's different for everyone.

Kazi’s Answer

Let's discuss some common careers and their pros and cons.
If you choose a career in the healthcare field, such as a doctor, you will have various advantages and disadvantages. Doctors are usually well compensated and offer job security, but they can also involve long hours and potential burnout.
Teaching is very fulfilling work; it has low pay compared to workload and stress, but it is satisfying and has the power to change lives by helping students learn and grow.
An engineer's job is demanding, well paid, and creative, but it involves long hours, working under pressure over deadlines.
My career as an oriental medicine doctor, which is to help patients with health and well-being, is very satisfying and rewarding to me but, on the other hand, stressful, with possible emotional and physical burnout.
Think about what interests you and explore.

Best,
