- Apply more criteria to selecting a career than "most high paying" . This could include what work you like to do, work-life balance, independent versus group work, risk tolerance, and chances for advancement. For example, people working on an oil rig could make over $100,000 per year, but the physical risk and loneliness isn't worth it for everyone. It will take thought to develop but will be worth it.
- In the same vein, try to determine how much money you will need to have to live comfortably. San Francisco is a great place to live but also an expensive one. Maybe you could more easily afford housing, food, etc. in a lower-cost metropolitan area, and still have a great life. Talk with your family about their expenses to begin refining your earnings needs.
- Understand that there are fields that focus on artificial intelligence (AI) versus jobs that use it. Jobs in AI might be software developers or model builders. Future jobs that likely will use AI include almost everything from law to medicine to writing to planning and more.
