Hi Azul! You must be so excited to start your communications major. Communications can be such a fulfilling, creative and exciting career, and this is a great first step.

While I don't know the specifics of your school's program, here are some general things to keep in mind:
1. Communications is a broad and quickly changing industry. You're likely to get exposed to many different styles of communication, including public relations, advertising, marketing, journalism, and digital / social media. Come with curiosity and an open mind - you might learn that you like one more than the others, and then you can dive deeper into it!
2. Communications is often focused on group projects. While many other majors are extremely test-driven, I found in my communications studies that I spent much more time on group projects and papers rather than regular tests. It allowed me to be more creative and thoughtful, while also preparing me better to work on teams at my company.
3. You'll still have to do a little bit of math and science! Especially in your first year, you'll have a variety of classes to take and prerequisites to fill. Don't be afraid of the math and science courses. See them as a way to balance out your brain and make your communications work even stronger.
4. Network, network, network! Communications majors have an excellent opportunity to network while on campus - with professionals and with other students. Find as many opportunities to build connections as you can. In the communications industry, it really is all about who you know - so get out there and meet some people!

I hope this helps! Really excited for you to take this step in your career journey.

Azul, as you get ready to start a communications major in the fall of 2025, expect a mix of creativity, strategy, and a lot of self-discovery. You’ll spend time learning how messages are crafted and received across different platforms—writing, media, public speaking, digital content—and you’ll quickly realize how much communication shapes everything from branding to relationships to social change. Be ready for group projects, presentations, and feedback (sometimes lots of it), because collaboration and adaptability are big parts of the field. My advice is to stay curious and proactive: get involved in clubs, internships, or campus media early, experiment with different areas like PR, marketing, or journalism, and don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out right away. Communications is broad on purpose, and the more you explore, the more you’ll learn what really excites you.

Hi Azul! Very exciting that you'll be starting a Communications degree! Communications is a broad degree but very applicable to many industries and jobs, so I think you've made a great choice. Do your best to take a variety of courses that will stretch yourself to learn new concepts. You may see classes on anything from public relations, intercultural communications, gender communications, conflict management, leadership, and many others. I would especially recommend Leadership classes as they will translate into the workplace very well, no matter what path you decide to take. Overall you will learn a lot about professionalism, the workplace, writing, social media, networking, and so much more! Bets of luck!
