So, I’m not a vet myself, but I’ve spoken to a few during my sister’s journey into considering veterinary school. From what I’ve heard, The hardest part? It’s definitely the emotional side of things. Dealing with difficult decisions like euthanasia or when you can’t save an animal despite trying your best is one of the hardest aspects. It’s not just about treating animals, but also comforting their owners through some pretty tough moments. The workload is also intense. Expect long hours of studying, practical work, and constant exams. It’s mentally and physically draining.
To get through it, you really need a support system. Finding people who understand the grind is essential—whether that’s classmates, professors, or even a mentor. Also, learning to take care of yourself outside of school is crucial. Self-care isn’t just a buzzword—it’s necessary for staying sane. And honestly, celebrating the small wins along the way can make a huge difference. Whether it's nailing a tough procedure or just having a good day with an animal, those moments keep you going.
As for becoming a better person, most vets I’ve talked to say that vet school really shaped their perspective on life. It taught them resilience, patience, and empathy. You learn to handle stress better, push through tough times, and accept that life is unpredictable. So, yeah, it makes you stronger in ways you don’t even expect.
There are a lot of upsides...helping animals, forming meaningful relationships with pet owners, constantly learning, and having the option to specialize in things like surgery or exotic pets. But it’s not all sunshine. The emotional toll, long hours, and sometimes not-so-great pay can wear you down. The financial burden of vet school is also something to think about—it's expensive, and the payoff might not be as big as you'd hope.
but leemme say at the end of the day, it’s a challenging but deeply rewarding career. If you’re passionate about animals and you’re ready to take on those tough days as well as the rewarding ones, it might be worth it. Just remember, it’s okay to have doubts.
