Noah’s Answer

Shadowing people in the mental health field can be pretty difficult considering patient confidentiality, privacy and other concerns. Plus, psychiatrists get paid quite a lot by the hour and might not want to just for that reason. All of this said, I do think you have a really good shot of interviewing someone in the profession. You'd be surprised by how many strangers on linkedin would be willing to hop in a quick zoom call for you to ask them some questions. Plus if you're in high school or are young they'll probably be super impressed by you and BOOM you just got yourself a new connection.

Hope this helped <3

Michael’s Answer

Hi Arushi,

That's a great question. The easiest way to answer this question is to reach out to a clinic directly and ask about their availability to shadow. You may find it difficult to fully shadow unless you are in a medical profession or program. However, there are aspects to go on-site to the clinic and perhaps volunteer. The psychologist or psychiatrist may also let you interview them if you tell them it is for school or a potential career choice. I interviewed an orthopaedic surgeon when I was in high school when I wasn't allowed to shadow and it was very informative.

Thanks!

Mike
