How to stay motivated and inspired while stressed out?

I'm currently a senior in high school. With all the stress around finals, prom, graduation, college, it can be really hard to stay motivated to focus on school. For me, it also affects my ability as a student musician to focus on my music and be inspired by music. Are there any tips and/or tricks that can help my fellow seniors and I stay focused during this stressful time?

Hi Jastyn. don't worry! Reflecting back, I felt as though I was the only person feeling stressed out and less inspired than normal, only to learn and realize that there are many others that felt the same way I did. My tip and trick for you is to make a to-do list with the priorities, and add your music to that list. Once you start segmenting out the things you need to do (school work, finals, graduation, college...etc) you'll start to notice that it's not as overwhelming as you may think. Make sure you're putting music on your list, and separating your more stressful tasks with breaks in music. I'd also make a list of things that you're excited for which keeps me motivated and inspired.

Clémence’s Answer

Hi,
Stress is really a pain but it's good to look for tricks to manage them and the earlier the better. I found out quite late that I would always be stressing out for something and the next step is not the final release of the stress. And some types of stress feel like it prevents me from doing anything else but worrying.
There are different ways to manage the stress and I found a few tricks really working for me.
1) Remember that it happens to everyone, or a lot of people, you're not alone through the challenges and you're not the only one feeling that way
2) Create a motto for yourself, 3 little sentences that allow you to come back to focus and feel good about, like "I'm a good musician, I value my work and I will succeed in what I want to do"
3) Use mindfulness for the focus, there are a lot of websites, videos that allow to do guided short sessions (5-10 min) of mindfulness
4) when you feel overwhelmed or dispersed, just breathe!

It might sound silly but I like drumming the fingers on the surfaces when I feel anxiety/stress coming, a way to anchor back in reality and what I'm doing.

Clémence recommends the following next steps:

Look for mindfulness articles, videos
Remember of your value, that you are the one defining it and that you will achieve big things!

Hey Jastyn, it is completely normal to feel this way from time to time. I too sometimes get extremely anxious while dealing with a lot of things at once. This situation usually ends up in nothing getting done.
In such scenarios, as Hannah mentioned, prioritising is the key. However, this itself can get a bit challenging too. What I usually do for this is take a step back, calm my mind and see what would matter more when I will be thinking about my life years from now. Then I just postpone the things which might not be relevant after years.
I also make sure to give personal happiness, relationships and peace a priority in general to stay human :)
