What college will be like ?

I don't feel like I am a strong student and struggled a lot in high school. I never really felt that college was for me. However, I applied and was accepted at a technical school. I just hope I can handle it as I feel I would make a great electrician. It is just the homework and me handling it with my ADHD. I tend to work slower so I don't always get my assignments done in time.

Hi Jason,
I do appreciate your current circumstances. Just know that every human being is unique. Some people are fast learners, others average and another group are slow learners. Being slow takes nothing away from your true potential. It's important to focus on realizing your full potential. Having interest in becoming an electrician & the opportunity to study in a technical school is a huge step in forging a professional career for yourself. You need to remain focused, passionate & diligent. Understanding concepts & principles and relating them to real life situations puts you on a firm ground to succeed.
Seek opportunities for Internships, preferably in industrial settings. This will give you the chance to get hands-on experience and apply theoretical knowledge in real life situations. Additionally, you will get exposed to engineering standards, regulations and best practices. Working alongside professionals is an opportunity for mentorship and guidance.
Membership in professional associations such as IEEE is extremely important for personal & professional development. They develop technical standards, publish journals on current developments etc. Membership is available for interested students.

Shirleen’s Answer

You should absolutely give the technical school a try. Make sure to schedule a tour and meetings with the technical school professors and talk with them about the programs offered at the school. This will allow you to become more comfortable with the environment, instructors and requirements of the programs. When you are ready to register for classes make sure you start with a few classes (take the minimum class load for a full or part time student) to allow the necessary time for homework. Start with the classes that are required for similar programs. Once you experience the first semester you will become familiar with the time commitment, instructors and programs that meet your interests. Schedule office hours with your instructors and ask for special accommodations like extra time or separate space for tests. Always make sure to meet with your instructors if you have questions or need extra guidance on specific topics discussed in class. You will be great!

I think you're going to find your niche. It takes years to become a high level electrician with broad skills. On the way, you're going to learn that what you become good at in the electrical field is an uncommon specialty. There is at least a 30 year career of evolving ahead of you.

Robert recommends the following next steps:

Find a book about taking an apprenticeship test, and practice.
