How can I find good internships outside of networking with professors/instructors?

I am pursuing industrial engineering and looking for different ways to find internships. Should career fairs be on my list of options?

Hi Ammon, my professional background is not in industrial engineering; however, throughout the early stages of my professional career, I was able to snag some of the top internships within my fields of interest, including top media companies and fashion magazines. Below are some tips that could help in any area of interest that you are pursuing:
Stay curious: Attend as many meetup groups, conferences, and events around your area of interest. You always want to stay abreast of the top topics in your field.
Don't be shy: While at these meetups or events, introduce yourself! You never know who you will spark a conversation with. Making these connections will expand your network and increase your visibility.
Speak up: When the time comes for you to start seriously pursuing an internship opportunity, you can tap into your newly expanded network of people who work in your industry and hold positions you are interested in. Set up informational interviews with these individuals and ask thought-provoking questions. Your curiosity will show how engaged you are with your subject matter and could lead to an opportunity.
Don't forget to say "Thank You": Gratitude will determine your altitude.

You got this!

Dino’s Answer

Greetings Ammon, Thank you very much for contacting us. Your question resonates with my former students. As counselors, we typically establish networks with various companies for internships that are specifically matched with the programs in which students are enrolled. In certain academic internships, program chairmen also engage with industry to prepare students for their desired career objectives. In the current era, numerous opportunities lie before you. Ensure you are well-informed regarding your career decisions, as your internship phase will serve as a reliable predictor of your future career. Best of luck!

Dino recommends the following next steps:

1) Try to visit your program chair and ask some guidance about your upcoming internships
2) Consult the career and job placement office at your institution, as they may possess numerous resources that could assist you in securing an internship.
3) Compile a list of companies with whom you aspire to work post-college, as they regard their trainees as potential employees..
4)Conduct research on the job market and identify companies that provide internship programs.
5)Consistently consult with your program chair regarding your internship program. He/She will provide you with appropriate guidance.
