What is one thing I should look out for when teaching English to high school students??

I'm still a senior in high school, graduating in May of 2025. I want to be an English teacher because it's something I'm really passionate about and I can't wait for other people to learn the curriculum. I'm worried that I might appear boring to some of the students I teach so I'd love some advice on how to keep them interested in the future.

Think about what excites YOU about the subject. When you can, model your teaching techniques on what you found engaging in the classroom. Then give it your own spin.
Reluctant readers often respond best to reading what interests them. So, if possible, find pieces for students that touch on those interests.
When possible, find an "in" for a challenging piece of literature. For example, most students are terrified of Shakespeare. But when I taught Hamlet, I would emphasize the challenge of living up to a parent's absurd ideas of success.
Most of all, be yourself.

Get to know your students well. As a start point, ask them about their passions, dreams and topics they are interested in. Ask them about their expectations. Listen and be connected with them. Use brainstorming to encourage to come up with ideas on how they would prefer English classes to be. Provide different alternatives and let students vote on the one they prefer. Involve them to suggest books, articles and movies targeting the topics you want to teach. Encourage them to hunt and analyze grammar, spelling and comma mistakes on social media and other on-line platforms. Discuss them together. Use fun games, flashcards, role-play, debates, investigations (for example on topic such as kinesthetic communication); competitions and challenges (the group/team with the most correct answers in the fastest time possible is the winner). Motivate them to learn English explaining future benefits regardless of the profession they will choose. Prioritize practical application and let them learn by using language in real world context (projects such as storytelling - TED talks, marketing campaign presentation for a product, writing articles for a famous journal, trip guides). For sure you can find more resources and ideas on forums and on-line platforms directly from experienced teachers. Be creative and inspired!
