Hi Nana! Congratulations on getting accepted to SAIC. As an alum, I can confirm that their first year program is designed for students just like you to help you figure out what kind of art connects with your skillset, interests, and future goals. It's an amazing time to try new things and explore how to push you beyond what you're used to doing. I'd encourage you to explore that program fully when you start in the fall, ask questions and engage in your classes - you'll be on your way to figuring it out before you know it. Your first year advisor will help you select classes to register for (if that hasn't happened already) and you'll be able to select a few different areas that you're interested in.
If you're thinking long term about career strategies, it's great to be open to different kinds of roles and fields. Finding a full-time position in the arts can be challenging, but while you're in school, you can focus on developing a few core skills that can help you find your first position. Animation is definitely an area where there are might be more hiring opportunities compared to say, illustration, but the job market changes quickly these days. I'd encourage you to enjoy the first couple of years of your college education, talk to your professors about their work, stay curious, and keep an eye on how AI/technology/cultural shifts impact the creative field while you're in school. You're going to be great!

The right thing to do is to look within yourself and figure out what you're truly passionate about. Only you can feel those emotions, and only you know what excites you. Once you discover it, hold onto it tightly.

I agree with Kim, the best thing you can do is get through the foundation / fundamental courses first, since they'll cover every aspect that comes in each of the different aspects of art. As you learn more, it should become more apparent - as well as the practice you do outside of classes - which path is right for you.

Hi Nana,
The great thing about school is that you don't have to decide right away. You'll take foundation courses that will apply to anything that you do, and your strengths and interests will reveal themselves as you study. Congratulations on your acceptance into SAIC; work hard and enjoy yourself!
