How do you stay motivated until the end, through the ups and downs? Nursing school is hard. Is there ever a point where you feel like the sacrifices aren't worth it or won't pay off in the end? #Spring25
After years of different medical programs, I've finally been accepted into an ABSN program. Now, with restricted financing and funding, having to step back from work and time with my family, I wonder if my dream of becoming a nurse is worth the sacrifices, blood, sweat, and tears.

It is worth it if your heart is set on being nurse. I would not recommend it if nursing was an option rather than a calling. There are easier options out there that pay more money. And if you put the same amount of work into them as you put into nursing, you would probably be extremely successful with less stress. At the end of the day, looking at what is required of nurses compared to other careers (and I say this as someone who came from a business/accounting/IT background), nursing takes a lot of of you as a person - but you might eventually earn a little less than someone in another field while doing things that sometimes make you subservient. That is why it has to be more of a calling than just a job. If you did all of these just for a paycheck, there are other better paying jobs out there that do not require a piece of your soul. An IT person will never have to help someone in their dying process, or help bring a life into this world. An accountant will never have to deal with someone else's caner or heart attack other than their own. These are the realities of our job. Yet we do it with joy.
And nursing school sucks, but the training goes by fast. one moment you are barely getting by because it is hard. And the next you have 2 years experience. Nursing school is hard. Do not make sadden decisions, especially during hard classes like med-surge or pharm. ABSN is especially hard because you have to cram 4 years worth of work into 1 year. Realistically, you should barely be working if you are in an ABSN program. I know - I did ABSN, and I was struggling even after doing an LPN and working as a tech for more than 10 years.
Most of all, give yourself grace. All those other nurses made it. And some were probably not as bright or caring as your are, Why not you?

Thank you so much for this brutal, yet honest truth. I feel the nerves and fears just take over the excitement. I think I just have to do it and start there. I know it’s what my heart wants to do. I have to use the fear as motivation.
