What does becoming a dietitian entail?

I am an 18 year old and a senior year in high school. I have been in culinary for all four year, but I want to become a dietitian and I am wondering if working with food is still involved in this type of career.

Great choice Jenna! Being a dietition is very specialized healthcare career. Basically involves educating and helping make good food choices to improve health and manage diseases. I would highly recommend getting engaged with community and local hospitals' food/diet program. Give your time and volunteer over summer and assess if that is what you would like to do for a career.
If you so choose, you would attend college to earn a bachelor's degree in nutrition or related field. How to Become a Dietitian:
Education:
Earn a bachelor's degree in dietetics, nutrition, or a related field.
Complete a supervised internship or clinical practice (usually 1,200 hours).
Licensing:
Pass the national registration exam to become a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in the U.S.
Maintain credentials through continuing education.
Skills Needed:
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Analytical thinking to assess and solve nutritional problems.
Knowledge of food science, human physiology, and behavior change strategies.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jenna!

While I don't work in the field, nor am I based in the US, I can share with you my personal experience with the topic of nutrition, both for myself, as well as for my 2 young children. I've been trying to eat healthy my entire life, but once I became a mom almost 6 years ago, I started to research the topic even further to make sure I could give the best support to my children to stay healthy and have a positive development. This is how I ran into the topic of the gut microbiome and its role in helping the immune system fight off other disease, as well as the connection between the gut microbiome and the brain. It's a fascinating field and one that does look very closely at food (choice of foods, how we combine them, how we cook them, etc.) and how it supports our holistic wellbeing. Another emerging field, especially now with the advances in data science and AI is the field of nutrigenomics - how our diet interacts with our individual genome and how it shapes our health.

My recommendation to you is to start reading about trends in the world of food and nutrition so that you can anticipate how this field will evolve and make career choices that set you up for future success. The world is changing fast and adaptability and foresight will be critical skills for those who want to future-proof their career.

Best of luck with your choices!
