Baljit’s Answer

Hi Molly,
I graduated from law school, and it was my dream from a young age. The journey included a variety of subjects like business, fashion, art, science, and sociology. I loved every moment, even with the challenges. It was tough at times, like attending classes when I was sick, dealing with transportation issues, and enduring sleepless nights to stay on track with my peers and professors. But looking back, it was all worth it. Law school was something I did for myself, and it's an achievement I will always cherish. If you are committed to personal success and helping others, law school could be a great path for you!

Ticiana’s Answer

Hey Molly
It's quite a complex question in my opinion... I'd tell you first to think if you LIKE the type of areas and studies required, as the colleague well mentioned above that reading & writing is so necessary. Law is so important to form our opinions and understanding of modern society, I'd say that anyone could be a good fit even if they don't wish to become a lawyer, as there are endless opportunities in the legal field (private or public, litigation or counselling, etc). Well, it does have to match with your character, as some people really don't enjoy being surrounded of books for research and are more prone to other rational areas like engineering, computer science or even dealing with the human's body as doctors or physiotherapists. Full disclosure, I've always known that I wasn't a good candidate for medical school, that was never for me (!) but at some point in school I did consider engineering, until one day I met a teacher that changed the way I would see the world so I wanted to learn about laws.
Have you ever tried a career aptitude test? You can also search for summer internships, shadowing legal work and maybe even volunteering... We will have insecurities in many stages of our lives, also have in mind that you don't need to choose a career path for the rest of your life, things can still change along the way :)
Best of luck!

Pam’s Answer

I applaud you for thinking about law school! My daughter graduated from law school last year, so I saw some of what it takes to get through the rigorous three years. There are so many different areas of law that students can pursue, but regardless of that, you will need to spend a significant amount of time studying, reading, writing, and applying logic and critical thinking skills. If these are things you enjoy or find some satisfaction in doing, law school may be a good fit for you. Undoubtedly, you will need a high degree of dedication and a willingness to put in some long hours each week. Networking with other students, professors, lawyers and judges is also important. Your law school will likely provide a lot of opportunities to do this, and it is very beneficial to take advantage of them. Also, resilience is key. It is helpful to be able to let go of occasional misses on cold calls in class, for instance. While it is important to be prepared and organized, there are days that it is difficult to balance everything. Law school will be difficult, but keep in mind that while others may project confidence, there is a good chance they're feeling insecure sometimes too. Don't let your insecurities hold you back. Get involved in law societies, bar prep programs and law journals and build relationships with your professors. Good luck with your decision regarding law school!

DENNIS’s Answer

Hi Molly:
Great question. I have been a lawyer for over 40 years. I love it - I feel like I am helping people most of the time. Being a lawyer has it's ups and downs like everyting else but in the end it's all about making our lives better. Your insecurities can be an asset or a liability depending on how you want to handle them. Frankly the fact that you asked the question leads me to believe that they are an asset to you. Why?
Much of law is about empathy. People want a lawyer not only for their brain but for their heart. They want a lawyer who feels the pain or fear or anger they feel. They want someone who understands. Your question demonstrates that you have that quality.
Lawyers come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. Some are good lawyers and some are bad. Some love what they do - a lot hate it. Remember, Law and law school are tools for you. I loved being in law school. Met my future wife there and made great friends. Some classmates hated the practice and used the law to get into jobs they liked. It's all just a journey where you learn about yourself at every turn!
Now use your insecurities to question yourself but don't let them stop you. Use your insecurities to be your own judge and jury. Question, question and question - that's how you learn.
You are about to start a great adventure! Enjoy ! You will do fine. Good luck!!
