How can a Computer Science degree be applied to a banking position?

Could it be applied to developing and improving back end systems? Would there be a better degree that's suited for that?

Below are my suggestions :
1. Take business related courses as your minor, e.g. accounting, finance, business management, etc.
2. In banking, there are many tech platform, e.g. Online banking, mobile banking, Cash Payment, Accounting, HR, Finance, etc. You can explore the programming languages using in these platform and practise more.
3. Speak to someone who are working in tech department of banks to understand the job.
4. Explore intern opportunities in tech department of banks

A computer science degree is great for any industry. I've worked in a variety of industries like medical, education, insurance, and financial. I hate to answer a question with a question, but why do you want to limit yourself to the banking industry? One of the reasons I've never had trouble finding a job is that I'm not tied to any one industry. Don't get me wrong, there is a huge demand for software engineers in the fintech industry. Such a huge demand that it has a nickname.
Imagine the available jobs at any one time as a deck of cards. If you are open to all industries, you can pull a card and apply. If you're only looking at the financial sector, that's like saying you will only apply to a job if it's a Jack. How many cards do you think you need to pull (or jobs that you ignore) before you pull a Jack.

Agree with the above that your degree is a great foundation for Banking and other financial services sectors like Asset & Wealth Mgt and Insurance. If you can, try and take a few business courses while still in school like Econ, Basic Finance, etc to help you get a basic understanding of Banking and Finance. Lastly, try and read The Wall Street Journal everyday as that is the universal language of finance. Your school should have subscription access that you can take advantage of.
