What is the realistic process of becoming an owner/executive of a professional sports team, outside of a college education?? #Spring25?
I am majoring in Sports Management but I am aware the steps to becoming an owner/executive of a professional team involves much more than studying. It would be great to have a streamlined plan or at least more direction. #Spring25

Start with money and relationships with influencers and go from there. Not just anyone can purchase a team. Good luck!

Great question! Honestly, becoming an owner or executive of a pro sports team is about way more than just your degree. Most people start with internships or entry-level jobs in sports—anything to get experience and make connections. Networking is huge, so go to events, talk to people, and find mentors who can guide you.
As you move up, focus on learning the business side—like finance, marketing, and team operations. For ownership, you’ll need significant resources or partners, since most teams are owned by groups with a lot of capital.
It’s a long process and usually takes years of working in the industry, building your reputation, and meeting the right people. But if you stay persistent, keep learning, and put yourself out there, you’ll put yourself in a good position for those top roles.
