While in school for fine arts, how should I go about making connections that will help me work as a full time artist?

I am currently a senior in high school, and I am planning to pursue a bachelor of fine arts. This has been my dream since I was in middle school, and I am extremely passionate in making art my career. However, I know there is no one path to becoming an artist, and I am unsure about the steps I will have to take in order to make fine art a full time career. I'm sure I will learn more as I pursue my degree, but I was wondering if there were any tips that helped you get a head start in connecting to the world of professional artists. Thank you!

I might not have a more practical solution than what Jason suggested, but here's some encouragement: As you go on your personal journey, choose to connect with people you think would be great to work with. Stay grounded and remember who you are. Be open and ask questions that really matter to you, things you would love to learn about from someone who knows a lot. This way, you create a win-win conversation that can lead to a deeper connection.

Honestly, the best thing you can do is start putting yourself out there early. Talk to your professors because a lot of them are working artists and can connect you to opportunities. Go to gallery openings, art shows, and local events, even if you feel awkward at first. Follow artists you admire on social media, and do not be afraid to message them (just be respectful and genuine). Also, say yes to small opportunities like group shows, internships, or helping out at galleries, because you never know who you will meet. It is really about being present, being kind, and building real relationships, not just networking for the sake of it.

You are already on the right track by thinking about this now.
