How do I let myself relax in my school without letting my grades slip too far?
I'm an overachiever and I've worked hard to get really good grades in college, but because of this I spend more time on my schoolwork than I really need to. I want to have more time to spend with my family and friends, but I'm worried that if I spend any less time on my schoolwork I'll start getting bad grades. How do I dial back my efforts in school without letting my grades slip too far?

Hi Madelyn,
Try using the structured app on the iPhone and have a detailed day mapping out the things you will study everyday. Stick to your daily tasks as much as you can and do some extra studying when possible. For example, I would study M-F and give myself grace Saturday and Sunday. During the week I really focused on the material given for the week and if it was a light week I’d use it to get ahead. Typically during the first week of the semester the work load is lighter. Take advantage of those weeks and get ahead (the syllabus has the entire layout for the semester) that way you have less to worry about. Always do content review as well. What I mean by this is look back at your notes every once in a while or make notecards on things you know were hard for you to understand. Later on you can either review your notes or notecards. Repetition will help you solidify the information and it will help you better understand new material. If you do all this, you will not be behind in classes and you can enjoy time with family and friends on the days you give yourself grace.
Best of luck!

It’s totally okay to feel this way—you’re not alone. Wanting to do well in school and have a life outside of it is completely valid. One thing that might help is working on time management. Like, try to separate your study time and your personal time, and plan ahead when you can. Sometimes I’ll do certain assignments a bit earlier so I can enjoy the weekend or have time with friends and family without stress.
A little balance can actually make you feel better and still keep your grades up.
