While SLP's endure academic/professional growth in this field, I want to know how this field personally changed you, positively and negatively ?

As an aspiring Speech-Language Pathologist, I have learned the impact we have on individuals with communication disorders. While SLP's endure academic/professional growth in this field, I want to know how this field personally changed you, positively and negatively?

Martha’s Answer

Great question! I have been in this field for 35 years. I actually fell into it. My undergraduate degree was in nursing. I practiced one year and got out. I went back to school to get a masters in deaf education. That did not last long and switched to speech path. It was a great choice! Sometimes I think this field has changed me more than the clients. I have learned a tremendous amount about people in general, how to communicate for my self, making judgments of people, cognitive development, executive functioning, and so much more. We will always have that client that is just different and the traditional methods do not work, so off to a workshop we go to figure out how to help them. So many workshops. so many different ways to address a problem. There is a saying that the teacher always learns more than the student, and that is so true in our field as well.

Negativity can be found everywhere about everything. I prefer to focus on the positive and how to lift up someone else.

Thank you for asking the question.

Lynne’s Answer

Hi Delilah!
I have been a practicing and certified SLP for over 35 years. I knew that this was the career path for me as a senior in high school.
My years have been very rewarding. I have worked in healthcare, public school systems, and private practice. Each work environment has provided me with professional and personal growth. I have been rewarded beyond measure because of the people that I have met and helped over the years.
Negativity can be found anywhere... if you're looking for it.
